Parapanda Theatre Lab (PTL) started as a
Theatre group in 1994. Initially known as Parapanda
Arts, the group was started by two theatre students
of The University of Dar es salaam;
Mr Mgunga Mwa
Mnyenyelwa and MS Mona Mwakalinga.
The word Parapanda is derived from a Kiswahili word
meaning a traditional music instrument used to alert
members of the community. This instrument could be
likened to military bugle. The Organization bears
this name to give force to the function of theatre
in our contemporary Tanzania. Lab is a short form of
Laboratory. The organization is, therefore,
dedicated to experimentations of various theatrical
forms.
PTL was registered by the Ministry of Justice and
Constitutional Affairs in January 2002 and it is
committed to the following objectives:
-
Researching and experimenting on both
traditional and contemporary theatre art forms
and expressions.
-
Producing African performances, such as story
telling, poetry, dance, etc
-
Organizing theatre exhibitions such as
symposia conferences, etc
-
Organizing theatrical and other cultural
festivals.
-
Providing professional training to theatre
artists
Vision
